Georeferencing
Georeferencing links pixels or coordinates in a dataset to real-world locations on Earth.
Also known as: geolocation, geo-registration
Expanded definition
Georeferencing defines where data sits on the Earth, including spatial extent, pixel size, and CRS.
Small georeferencing errors can look like real change in time series, especially along edges of fields or roads. Operational workflows should track CRS, pixel grid definitions, and any reprojection or resampling steps that could shift alignment.
Related terms
CRS (Coordinate Reference System)
A CRS defines how coordinates map to locations on Earth, including the projection and datum.
GeoTIFF
GeoTIFF is a raster image format that embeds georeferencing metadata so pixels map to real-world coordinates.
Reprojection
Reprojection converts data from one coordinate reference system (CRS) to another.
